Spreading the idea, hearing the words, seeing the movement .. the power of video ...

Bloggers, Authors, Writers, Creators, Innovators, Entrepreneurs .. wherever you are this is your future .... thank goodness for thinkers and developers and researchers and Chris Anderson and Seth Godin .. I know – lots of “ands” ... but this you need to see ....

Seth Godin’s latest blog post is entitled “Beyond Crowdsourcing” where he advocates one of the latest global TED talks, given by Chris, who is the present curator of the TED talks ... which I know most of us will be aware of and have probably listened to at least one or two of the presentations.

Chris Anderson - TED curator

I thought I’d just have a brief sit, start watching the video Seth suggested and think I’ll come back sometime – but NO .. this riveted me to the screen .... so much so this is my post today – I encourage you to watch it – 18 minutes.

All of you are creators, designers of your life, dreamers, wanderers .... here is the future for us, wherever we are in the world, we can create an idea and get it to spread .. this video should change your thinking .... should it not?

I was first introduced the idea of micro-finance through a video in the early 1980s on the Grameen Bank, the concept of people helping themselves is spreading .. and we now have Kiva and many others - I'm sure you'll visualise the possibilities of these sorts of thinking ...

Here we see the power of video, the power of people, the power of crowds .. that little sprinkling from the clouds, that can spread and grow into a storm .. as Seth says “His video will be seen by more than a million people by the end of the week” .. not possible with the publication of a book – is it?!

We’ve had the printing press, we’ve had reference books, almanacs, encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases and many many others .... we were into audio ... but now video will be the 'king of the castle' .. if one video will be seen by one million people within a week .. what ideas can be spread through the power of openness and as Chris calls his talk “Crowd Accelerated Innovation" ....

Please watch the video – and come back and comment .. or vice versa! .. but let’s add to the numbers viewing of this amazing piece of history ... let me know what you think .....

TED Video: Chris Anderson - Crowd Accelerated Innovation

Chris Anderson was a former computer journalist and magazine publisher – see Wiki for his interesting brief bio.

Dear Mr Postman - my mother seems comfortable and continues to hear, though hasn’t been awake sufficiently to have a conversation. The weather is still reasonable – but we can feel it drawing in ..

That was an interesting video. I guess the crucial point is, you have to have a video that goes viral, or else you won't reach enough people.

This sounds intriguing. I'm off to check out the video. Thanks for the link. Glad your Mom can still hear and hope all continues to go well.

Without dreams, we die--I believe. I am going now to watch it.

Praying that your mom awakes so you can spend conversational time with her.

Thanks much,

Hi Dot .. you're right - either an individual who has the idea, or a whole crowd of people with the similar ideas - who get together, or who join forces along the way ..

I suspect what TED are planning will generate more ideas around this sort of movement .. the shakers and movers of our world .. and new entrepreneurs from around the world.

Chris' background is interesting .. if you get a chance to look at the short bio in Wikipedia.

Enjoy Sunday and thanks for coming by and commenting .. Hilary

Hi Mason .. it certainly is interesting .. and I hope you've enjoyed it and can see why I was inspired to post the post!

Yes - it is good re my mother and thanks for your support - have a good Sunday - Hilary

Hi Teresa .. this might suit your 'Stepping Out' post .. new horizons .. but exactly as you say "Without Dreams" .. we die .. or we go nowhere, experience little ...

I'm sure you'll enjoy the video - hope you can get back and post a video comment ...

Thanks for your prayers .. so do I .. but she will awake - as long as she can hear & she could this morning .. then we can have a good chinwag!

Blessings for your Sunday .. Hilary

Hi Hilary - I love how you say all of us are dreamers, designers, and creators of our own life. It's so easy to let life happen to us, or even interpret "go with the flow" as drifting aimlessly.

My brother recently remarked to me that "the difference with you is you've always had a plan." Well, not really, but it was nice that he thinks that. It hasn't always been true, and those were the unhappy periods. Creating our life gives us joy. This video expresses that so well. We are made to be joyful and do the most we can with the gifts we've been given.

A great message for a Sunday morning here in Minnesota. Thank you!

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

Hi Betsy .. thank you .. but we are, as you know dreamers, designers and creators, – unless we wish to, as you say, “drift aimlessly”.

Interesting that your brother noticed that you thought progressively .. and are always working towards something .. at least you and Pete are deciding where to go with your lives and which direction it should take.

You are so right – if we are busy and occupied with something then we forget our troubles .. and this so often gives us joy and happiness as we see our life flourish.

So pleased you enjoyed the video and that you can see what I saw into it .. yes I’m amazed at how I keep thinking about it .. and it’s due for another viewing .. I think I might just listen again now !!

Have a good day today and the rest of the week .. and I have your part 4 to get across too .. good to see you Betsy .. thanks for commenting .. Hilary

Hilary!
I've always been fascinated and in awe of the TED movement. I LOVE this video. I'm inspired, and Chris Anderson has always impressed me so much. By the way, if you missed the video of The League of Extraordinary Dancers at TED -- definitely check it out. I was bowled over.

Thanks for this post, Hilary. You're rocking the web!
Now, I suppose I better get to work on my video posts... (eep!)

Sounds like a great video, by you and the comments. Anything Seth Godin, well almost all he says, or recommends, makes sense to me.

I had read once that the 12-second video was suposed to be the ucoming popular thing! A lot of impact in a short segment.

Hoping you had a lovely day, and all your subsequent ones will be lovely too.

BB is done dancing now, and out whittling a whistle out of a stick he found in the cat's bowl.

Hilary, thank you for posting this video and talking so fervently about it. I will watch it on Monday (bed is calling). I'm happy to see updates on your mom, too. It's been awhile since I stopped by your blog --- always makes me smile when I do.

Have a wonderful week!
Love,
Megan

Many external sources of information bombard their messages. We feel the energy vibration, the emotions conveyed through images and sound. A perspective is everything invites one back to one's inner knowing. Do you accept what already feels right inside or not. Many people allow the external world to determine what they focus attention on. One is invited to remember how to listen to the heart,

Hi Lori .. great to see you and wonderful to hear you LOVED the video! It is extraordinarily interesting .. I hadn’t seen Chris Anderson before – and was pleased I read his brief bio etc .. No I haven’t seen the Dancers’ video .. they obviously grabbed everyone’s attention – I’ll definitely check it out.

Thanks Lori .. not sure rocking the web is quite the right turn of phrase!!! But I’ll take the compliment – thank you!! Yes – me too .. but just a normal blog or two .. have a great week .. we will won’t we?! With a hug – xox – Hilary

Hi Jannie .. – yes if you can find 18 mins! In your busy schedule .. from a Funsterland songster’s point of view – the video could be very enlightening ... enjoy it.

I’m sure the 12 sec videos are amongst the most seen – attention spans are pretty short .. but watching Chris’ presentation .. you’ll hear him say the human brain is wired for a story presentation – i.e. not a sound bite.

Thanks – life is settling in and that’s the main thing – I can only go forward .. and this week will be interesting .. lots to do.

So pleased to hear BB is having a break .. even if he’s whittling a whistle out of a stick he found in the cat’s bowl ... saw some wonderful Medieval musical instruments at the weekend .. beautiful workmanship ..

Enjoy your week and success with lyrics, music et al ... xoxo from Hardwick, Mum and I .. Hilary

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

Hi Megan .. I don’t blame you – bed is a good place to be .. I’m still catching up on my missing sleeps. Enjoy the video when you do watch it .. and it’d be great if you came back & left a brief update.

Yes – Mum goes on & that’s the main thing .. and the fact she can hear .. even if she falls asleep on me – which is happening more often .. but it’s quiet peace for her (and for me), as she doesn’t know the hustle and bustle going on around her.

I will have a good week – you too .. and see you soon .. Love from us here .. Hilary

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

Hi Liara .. you make a good point about not immediately reacting to things we see or hear .. the message I heard here .. is something that resonates for the future .. something to shift through the sieve of life. Certainly the Africans featured completely related to the message, and it was from their hearts.

So exactly as you say .. we should listen to the heart and not respond to outside influences until the time is right. I liked the learning message contained in this video.

Thanks for pointing out to us to remember the inner knowing. Have a wonderful week .. Hilary

Hi Hilary.
I'm not getting any sound on this video, though I'm sure I could find it on Youtube. The Internet does give us access to information quickly. Sometimes too quickly and when people don't verify it, rumours can spread.

Just the other day a friend was telling me that a famous personality (not one I'm familiar with) was tweeted as having passed away. The news spread in waves; even the media was reporting it. That person had to contact the media to tell them that he was still alive. Geez.

I always make sure that I check out a link before I tweet. Hello to your mother :)

Sharon K. Mayhew said...

Hilary--My prayers are with you and your Mum...I'm so glad that she has her hearing back and hope that she feels well soon and is up and about so you can have some good conversations. :)

Hugs!

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

Hi Sara .. excellent to hear you’ll pop over – hope you saw what I see!

Very powerful if we think about it. It’ll be good to hear your reaction – have a brilliant week .. Hilary

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

Hi Davina .. I just checked again & it’s ok .. but the link is:
http://www.ted.com/talks/chris_anderson_how_web_video_powers_global_innovation.html

You’re right about one misjudged word and it’s gone .. so being careful is an absolute requirement I see for social media: watching our tongues?!

That’s terrible about the person not having passed away .. it’s happened in the past in the old days – a newspaper printed an obit – only to find the person alive and well ... same name, and initials .. just not the same man.

Thanks for the thought re tweeting .. it worked here ok, and have just checked the other two links to the blog and to the Wiki bio .. all ok. The whole video can take a second or two to start up ..

What I’ll do .. I’ll add in the actual TED link underneath .. done! But thanks for drawing my attention to the possibility.

Thanks for your thought re my Ma .. have a great day and week ahead .. Hilary

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

Hi Sharon .. thank you re my mother – she is peaceful that’s the main thing and as long as her hearing stays ... then I’m fine – not being able to communicate is very difficult. Sleep is the order of the day seemingly at the moment .. but she knows I’m around .. lovely to hear from you – thank you - Hilary

Hmmm...18 minutes? I will have to come back to view this video. You make it sound really interesting. Thanks for the heads up!!

It never ceases to amaze me, this power of technology and the internet. It's ability to have messages reach so many people in so many places, instantly, makes it such an effective tool, really that is available to so many.

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

Hi Evelyn .. 18 minutes - I promise you .. you won't even know ..

I was blown away and with your creativity ... way to go!!

Enjoy it & I do hope you get across to watch .. have a great week ..Hilary

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

Hi Joanne .. it staggers me too - and the future Chris was suggesting in the TED video makes such interesting thought processes ..

For us "goldener" ones .. it is wonderful how much has changed and is changing ..

You would know - seeing as that's your line of business - I would love to have your knowledge! .. one day - I'll get there & master some of the techie things!

Great to see you here .. Hilary

Hilary, first an apology. My internet speed is throttled for the next couple of weeks, so I'll have to come back at a later date to check this vid out. Sounds fscinating though. Could this be considered a form of viral marketing, I wonder?

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

Hi Tony .. no worries – internet connections are troublesome – mine went off for a while yesterday – puts me out of joint!

The video is really worth seeing .. and probably yes a form of viral marketing – but if 1,000,000 people see it in the first week .. then it’s probably faster than viral ... viral on steroids? Not good though! Not sure which type of wave is the fastest .. and there are many different types – so my scientific research stopped right here!

When you get the chance and the internet is released to free flow again .. it’s a good video for your creative free thinking brain – you’ll really enjoy it ..

Hope the net doesn’t cause you too many hassles .. look after yourselves .. Hilary

Hi Hilary,

I feel like I'm a bit in the past. I don't watch much in the way of web videos. Part of the reason is that my computer doesn't seem to handle it.

The other reason is that I love text. Always have. My posts are mostly text.

I like how you use a lot of visuals in your posts but I don't seem to do so.

This video got me thinking that I really should start producing web videos.

It was really good. Thanks for sharing it.

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

Hi Chase .. so pleased you got across to watch it. I agree with you – I’m not a great YouTube watcher or web video – but I do like the TED ones particularly – though have only watched a few .. but this one blew me away – re my creativity etc & the possibilities.

I love text – but we get so much & I find I can’t read long paras now or long posts – so to give my posts an extra buzz – I put the photos in & mix and match the ideas .. so it’s not one long subject. Actually it gives me a buzz too! & I learn .. and it’s so wonderful being able to hear for instance: Flanders and Swann sing their songs via You Tube.

Pleased to hear it resonated with you .. me too .. and delighted you enjoyed it – great to see you and have your comment .. thanks for being here .. Hilary

Sharon K. Mayhew said...

I think her knowing you are there is comforting for her too. :)

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

Hi Sharon .. yes I'm sure - today I stayed as she was partially awake .. she certainly knows I'm there for her and trusts in my love for her - thank goodness .. I'm lucky ..

Many thanks for coming by again .. and reminding me of her need for me too .. Hilary

Hi Hilary! It cannot be a coincidence that just last week a very techy friend of mine said I absolutely needed to get a web cam and do videos on my (yet to be created) website - and now I see this! Yep, I'm getting the message! :) VERY interesting. This is really the way of the future, this whole video thing, so although I have been resistant to turning techy, guess I best get with it!
Hugs
suZen
p.s. I LOVE TED! Watch a lot of it!

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

Hi SuZen .. sure can be a coincidence! I’m sure it’s the way to go – to build a group following .. the connective world.

Isn’t it extraordinary how things come together – so pleased you enjoyed the video and the message .. so we’ll see you on webcam shortly .. ?! Me too – trying to get some input to get up to date a little ..

I love the TED talks .. sometime I’ll catch some more – just so pleased I caught this one! See you soon .. great you’re here .. have a good thinking techie week .. Hilary

Fascinating video. Thanks for the link. I do love TED! I can't help but feel, though, that much good information is lost in the sheer volume that is created every day. Much of what goes viral is superficial and quickly forgotten.

Wishing you and your dear mom the best.

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

Hi Angela .. glad you found the video fascinating .. and the TED videos are so informative.

I agree there is so much information being made (a great deal of which is rubbish) – but we do pick up the big players .. and if we can get something (like this video) to go viral – then it’s reaching more people who are likely to do something with the idea ..

Also serious ‘stuff’ will have a ‘home’ .. in this instance TED .. so those of us who want to learn more .. have a home to go to ..

Thanks .. yes my mother seems to be comfortable and peaceful .. thanks for your thoughts .. all the best Hilary

I do so enjoy the TED talks and watch them for hours...and I put one up about designing with information on Biking Architect just in the last couple of weeks, because Architects when they do their presentations think they are talking to people who still READ and Analyze information...nope now we don't get what we can not visualize...I have seen the Seth G video will go look at Chris
thinking about you and your mum and you are in my prayers

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

Hi Theresa .. thanks for coming by .. and it’ll be good to get your ideas on the video when you’ve seen it. I can see watching a TED talk at Taekwondo .. wouldn’t really work!

How are you commenting from there .. on a blackberry/iphone .. or do they have an internet connection you can use?

Hope the kids had a good time with their class .. Hilary

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

Hi Karen .. thanks – it is interesting .. and I hope you enjoy it.

You too - enjoy the rest of the week .. Hilary

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

Hi Patricia .. I know you love your TED talks! I must get over and see the one you promoted on Biking Architect (is there an RSS button on it?) re Design.

Thank goodness someone is still Reading and Analinge information .. but if I can see something – and it’s a superficial read as such .. then I can visualise it more easily.

I know you enjoyed Chris’ TED presentation .. I spotted your comment over on Barbara’s blog .. – it is a very perceptive video.

Thanks Patricia .. appreciate your thoughts and prayers re my mother .. with blessings and a hug or two to you .. Hilary

The world is certainly changing because of the Internet and video. Sharing science was the most interesting idea. I'll ask my husband if he's heard about that.

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

Hi Theresa .. excellent that you’ve come back to leave a comment after watching the video .. thank you! I’d love to know what your husband thought .. especially if he’s in the scientific field – it’s the openness of everything shown that was so interesting ..

Great to see you and hope the ABC classroom is going well today .. enjoy the kids .. Hilary

Hilary,
Love the video you've shared!!

Whether a video reaches millions or a few hundred (or less) - the impact can be powerful - and it's in what we can take from that video - and then act upon ourselves to innovate even further!!

And with the sheer number of people in this world...there is definitely a group out there who shares some similar interests...

Very awesome!!

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

Hi Lance .. great to see you – thank you – you use the video spreading already through RAOKA and your Levity projects .. so you’re “waaayyy aheeaad”!

It was such an interesting thought provoking presentation – I just felt I had to put it out there .. and you’re right that’s what I saw .. we can develop our own way of doing things via the concept – innovate ... that’s the name of the game for the 21st century.

There’s a few of us here .. as we’re showing with Barbara (next post) .. and with your projects .. new ideas and new thoughts ..

Lovely to see you .. have a great weekend .. awesome one too .. your marathon must be almost here ... bon chance mon ami ... go, go, go ..... and success in finishing .. Hilary

Hi Hilary, I, too, caught the TED video from an email from Seth Godin. I've been a TED fan for a few years now and have marveled at the service it provides by making all their presentations available to us on video.

Since watching the video, I've been considering various ways of using video to share writing. Not sure where this is going, but I have a little Flip video camera ready when I'm ready to test a concept.

And speaking of Video, I love the way Lance promotes uplifting uses for sharing fun stuff with video.

Blessings for your mom and you.

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

Hi Amy .. lovely seeing you here on the blog – welcome. It just resonated and hit home immediately – it’s not my normal type of blog post – but a few things seemed to tie in & so I thought I’d put it out there ..

As you say the TED presentations are so informative and so interesting & I love that sort of learning or opening into the world .. someone sometime will highlight talks & it’s so great to hear about them.

I can see where you’re thinking of going with your Flip video .. it certainly opens lots of doors to ideas .. for presentations etc ..

Lance is a great communicator .. and has a wonderful joie de vivre .. it is wonderful to see and read his posts ..

Thanks for your blessings ... for us - she is always so pleased to know – that she’s in peoples’ thoughts ... Have a good week - Hilary
