Tomato … toe-mae-toe/I say to-mat-toe …

My mind came to this when I saw a quote, which seems quite appropriate today …

Heritage tomatoes from the
Isle of Wight - as supplied to M&S

"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit.

Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.”

The bench - now in situ

Attributed to Miles Kington (1941 - 2008), journalist, humorist, and musician, on a memorial bench near where he lived in Conkwell, overlooking the Kennet and Avon Canal … who hated the spot as there was nowhere to sit and enjoy the view – now there's a bench!

Conkwell hamlet
Conkwell – I had to find out about the name of this village … it was mentioned in an Anglo-Saxon charter in 957 as “Cunuca leage”.

"Leage” refers to a woodland clearing, while “Canuca” is a Celtic word denoting “hill” … suggesting a survival of pre-Saxon British people in the area – c/o the Bradford and Avon Museum.

The Canal
Another quote pertinent to today … at least I thought so … came via Sean (we're both 13th day of the month babies … he October, me January – what that means I've no idea!) - this post I see is the 13th too - but in the month of June ... just enjoy his library - all 10% of it!! ...

Christoph Martin Wieland
(1733 - 1813)

He sent me off to Christoph Martin Wieland from the German Enlightenment era … his thought in English …

“Only a true cosmopolitan can be a good citizen”.

I and my thoughts have been all over the place … I'm sort of gathering them all up – eclectic mix … from all parts of the awareness … it's quite tiring! … with lots to catch up on.

Eastbourne seafront and
promenade

So finally summer's here – little wind around, perhaps living on the south coast in times like this brings some relief … so glad the summer breeze flitters a bit.

Oh yes – and we have those yellow-green balls down here next week – so there's no parking – not to say I worry, but we could do with more rain – though this week … there was a water leak – and we had no water for 9 hours … I'd heard the tell-tale ping of a text … and seeing the mess – made plans. Before my bath – I'd run it, as I was going out early to History, I saved some 'fresh water' … and left the bath in for the dirty water.

Tennis in Eastbourne -
ground preparations
After history I came back for some lunch, then realising that the leak wasn't fixed … I went off to town – coming back at teatime as I heard the chap say 'he's just turning the tap back on' … so all is now well again.

Well not quite – there's still an 'ole in the road … but we have water: thank goodness … and I can't think of other places too much – I just remember how lucky I am.

Strawberry Moon - over Belle Tout
lighthouse and Beachy Head

Oh yes – there was a magnificent strawberry moon – that I didn't actually get to see … but so worthwhile via this pic …

Life toddles on … I'm pushing through … and I'll be around to see you all soon now, I hope …

One foot in front of the other, each thought sorted as it arrives - if it leaves without due attention, so be it! YAM xx

Wouldn't it be superb living along the Eastbourne seafront? On sunny days you just wander across the road and sit on the sand. On cool days, you sit in the lounge room and watch the sea through the front window. Sighs happily.

Everyone's talking tomatoes today!
Thoughts and ideas come unbidden and often in droves.
Keep well, Hilary x

Love the quotes - the tomatoes and the one on the bench! Both witty.

@ Yam - yes .. you're right - one foot in front of the others ... the trouble is those thoughts sit around ... and may return here in due course ...

@ Hels - great ... I wish it was sand - it's pebbly ... but always fun to be down there ...

@ Janice - it is the time of tomatoes isn't it. Yes - thoughts and ideas just keep coming ... unbidden or otherwise - thank you!

Glad to know you can bathe again and are not stinking up the place. I laughed at the quotes. Nice that beaches are open again, but alas parking is an issue. Aah - summertime. In TX - the tomatoes I like are in salsa at the local TX-Mex joint. I'll cheer you over a margarita, my friend.

I get cranky when the water gets turned off. Glad it's fixed.

So, in any given year (with the exception of leap years), your and Sean's birthdays will fall on the same day of the week. (Because January and October are the same month--day of the week wise. Go ahead, check it out with a calendar.)

@ Joanne - yes ... I wasn't stinking the place out ... the others - who knows?! The parking is an annual challenge re the tennis. Texas tomatoes delicious ... but I so enjoy the fresh veg and fruits at this time of year. I'll cheer you too - not, though, in the midday sun!

@ Sandra - that Strawberry moon is quite extraordinary isn't it ...

@ Liz - sadly we can't help it when the water is off ... but I made plans and coped before they managed to fix it.

You're right ... I have two goddaughters born on October 13th too - so was aware of that ... your maths' interests click in - thank you!

@ Dan - lots going on despite not feeling brilliant. But reading and curiosity keep me very well occupied ...

@ Katerina - great to see you here ... and thanks for enjoying the tomato quote ... it made me laugh. Also that Strawberry moon is quite extraordinary ... the skies are so clear at the moment. Really appreciate you enjoyed the post ...

Of all the interesting tidbits today, Hilary, (standard fare from you, of course), the thing that stood out to me was the quote from Christopher Martin Wieland. What he says is so true, and is reminiscent of the words of the distinguished Rudyard Kipling, “What can they know of England who only England know?”
It is as true today as it has always been that travel is what puts meat on the bones of human experience, facilitates understanding, dispels prejudice and in so many ways contributes to the enjoyment of life. I proudly count myself among the “true cosmopolitans” and I know that you do too. Enjoy the weekend coming up. Many kisses - David

Coming to think of it, water is one of the most essential things in our lives, is it not? That moon pic looks absolutely fabulous!

Interesting bits of information! I'm glad you got your water functioning again, Hilary. Love the moon photo! I didn't get to see it either.

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

@ Alex - thanks ... yes I thought both of them were wise quotes. Gosh I last went to Wimbledon ... donkeys years ago! Fun to be there though ... glad you had the experience.

@ David - Sean sent me off to look at Christoph Martin Wieland ... wise words indeed. Also what do those know who haven't been and experienced something ... so true per Kipling and you.

As you rightly say travel opens our minds ... I haven't travelled that much - yet have worked with various organisations which have been operating in different parts of the world. Also the blogging world has given me other insights into our world and our peoples.

Thanks for your wise and insightful words ... and you have a lovely weekend - slightly cooler here today ...

@ Pradeep - water is life itself - just about the only thing keeping us going along with mother nature and her goodies. Yes - I think I should have got out to see the moon - but health-wise I was better staying in ...

@ Debbie - great to see you ... yes I was glad when they turned up to fix the leak - I'd seen it happening when I left for History. Ok - I'm in good company in not seeing this strawberry moon ... I expect many didn't - the tv/net provides us with prompts ...

Cheers to you four - thanks for being here - enjoy your weekends - Hilary

@ Ventana de Foto - apologies I don't speak Spanish ... but can guess what you're saying - I'm glad you enjoy the post as it is ...

Cheers to the three of you - Hilary

I am remembering how lucky I am too. I had a broken ankle and it didn't heal right, and they found low bone density (you're the first person I've said that to, I'm not even sure why I'm disclosing it). Likely because I had a full hysterectomy about a decade ago (and no estrogen therapy). I'm on Week 17 and still not able to walk right but I'm trying. Seems like yesterday I didn't have a care in the world (well, not health-wise anyway). Things change so fast and certainly do make you even more grateful for those things taken for granted. Like water! Glad you got your water back. :). And that strawberry moon does look gorgeous.

i love the tomato quotation. Lovely photos! I hope we get rain here in Montreal, tomorrow is said to be 46 Celsius with the humidity, that is 114 Fahrenheit. Ouch! I plan to stay in, this kind of heat is not a good thing for me, I am 68 and cannot take this type of heat. Thank you so much for sharing, you have a lovely blog. Warm greetings from Montreal, Canada.

I was so sad I didn't get to see the strawberry moon! I love astronomy, and I can't believe I missed it! Sorry about the water leak! And the quote about the tomatoes is just wonderful.

@ Rosey - yes ... your ankle sounds really difficult ... I might be going in your direction: health-wise - that goes on. I do hope your ankle heals as best it can. Well life has since developed on - next post tells those tales. I'd have loved to have seen the strawberry moon in person ... and yes I was v glad the mains water was restored.

@ Linda - good to see you ... we've had a sprinkling of rain this morning, but it is cooler - I'm pleased to say ... 114 deg F would make me wilt.

@ Elizabeth - thanks for coming by - I'm late getting across to you. I've found another quote - I have to use soon. Glad you enjoyed these two quotes ... made me think ...

@ Sandra - Conkwell does seem like a delightful village doesn't it - and I love the bench. Life has been interesting this week ... as my next post describes ...

@ Jess - I have to get across to you too ... just a right muddle going on. I hope you'll come across to see the post I get up about stitching in time - soon! The water - now got a new one ... the quotes are fun aren't they.

Thanks for coming over the comment - great to see you all - lots been happening recently! Cheers Hilary
