Updates … and life a la E/b …

What a half week this has been – yes half a week … I was due out on Saturday, but in the end decided I wasn't going to cope – it was still very warm … but I was not feeling brilliant …

Whistling Duck

... so I set about doing some washing, as one does when time becomes free … then the second lot of fun and games started … the floor was wet!!

There'd been a whistling sound, that I couldn't place - but couldn't see anything, so as one does ignored it …

Whistling Boy -
Frank Duveneck (1872)

Mid-summer's day … the agents didn't reply, nor their emergency plumber … in the end I contacted the landlady, who lives in Kenya, thankfully she picked up the email.

In the end she suggested I contact an emergency plumbing service – he was brilliant, old school, and happily came out at 7 pm … he found the pinhole leak – hence the whistling sound.

I think this was the first edition
Then – thankfully … it was the hot-water service pipe (not the cold water inlet) … after checking he was able to cut out the pipe bit with the pin-hole … it was partly buried in an internal wall. Fix up a new bit of copper pipe – old school ability … and with all the bits and bobs with him in his van. Then we were (or I was) up and running again …

'Ole in wall - to the right ...

Still no news from the agents … in the meantime I'd been updating the landlady … often! Fairly exhausting … trying to explain what had happened. Behind a v tightly fitted washing machine, which probably hadn't been moved since it was put in – before my time, 7 years.

Sunday no news … at some stage I'd had to call out the NHS … so was dealing with them too – necessity called … not 'the mother of invention' just plain help!

Salmon with Greek salad
Yesterday … I had a food delivery as I thought that would help take the pressure off, the agents came round to see the mess and the 'ole in the wall' … and the NHS came … today I put off the District Nurses til tomorrow – as I have something else on, which I feel I can cope with now.

I used to live in the next road up -
you can see the Town Hall at the top of the pic
Then – the bomb squad came a-calling … thankfully not here – but in the next road to where I used to live!! Today I need to walk past that area to get to the appointment at the library … it is fun and games here.

Summer berries to calm us down

Thursday – the electric meter needs to be changed – as the 'system' won't work due to old age – all meters are being changed.

So you can see – a week is not v long in this little soul's life … and as it's been so hot – I'm way behind anyway … so need to catch up.

Eastbourne tennis - town hall (reddish
building with tower - left top)
I thought I'd better post something … I was going to put up a Stitch in Time post about quilting and the stars … but I obviously managed to delete my early draft – clever clogs am I.

I do wish I wouldn't get mentally curiously diverted … it's exhausting! So much to let you know about … so little time – but I'll get there – let's hope life eases up.

Screen shot from tv ... looking south -
Devonshire buildings - theatres etc
The photo above - may have been taken
from the top of the stand.

Thankfully the tennis is on … green green grass of home in Eastbourne … and I can listen to the cricket … of course I suppose, if I admit it, I get diverted off track.

Thanks everyone – I do hope this wasn't too boring or exhausting to read … I do feel easier today, thankfully …

Went from annoyance from a leak to holy cow, bomb squad! That is crazy.

You have a lot going on, my dear Hilary. I hope everything settles down soon. I'm glad the bomb squad wasn't called to YOUR house. The salmon with Greek salad looks delicious. Get some rest and stay as cool and comfortable as possible, please.

Love,
Janie

What a crazy week you've had, Hilary! Good thing the bomb squad wasn't summoned to your current residence. The salmon looks delicious, and I hope you've been able to relax a bit now.

Too many things happening at once and in torrid heat, too. I hope this week goes more smoothly.

After all the excitement you deserve a stretch of uneventful days.

Sandra Cox said...

Good gracious, Hils. You've more than hit your quota of stressers for the half week. Grab a glass of wine or iced tea or lemonade, a good book, put your feet up and relax.

Anabel Marsh said...

Goodness! That all sounds like the kind of excitement you could do without.

Liz A. said...

Glad to hear the small leak got fixed. That could have been a way bigger problem later on.

@ Alex - it's been a fun week ... it's still going on ... and I'm exhausted - but life is life ...

@ Janie - yes some few things happening and still are ... I guess settling down will be a few months away - I hope it eases a little in the meantime ... it's all good fun!

@ Debbie - I know - lots happening and still going on - thankfully the bomb squad probably wasn't really required - but being safe is the best. Do you know - I think I've had a pretty hairy week - the water leaks have been about as bad as a bomb disposal unit: causing me ongoing headaches. Yes - I've been eating well ... summer fruits, veg and salads - let alone fish ...

@ Janice - so far ... this week is much the same - trying to sort out and clear up, let alone the NHS things ... thankfully it's cooler now.

@ Kathy - ? excitement??? Just left me with lots to do - this week and onwards ... I too look forward to uneventful days ...

@ Sandra - you could say that ... lots of stressors these past few days ... never-ending apparently. Had some wine this evening ... but as for putting my feet up with a good book and concentrating ... that seems somewhat unlikely at the moment.

@ Anabel - how right you are ... but life will deal us lemons won't it - I look forward to when I can make lemonade ...

@ Liz - the small leak might be fixed - the hole, the wet floor, et al ... still to be sorted ... and the dealings with the NHS, the agents, the landlady ... it is fun and games ...

Thanks so much everyone for visiting ... cheers Hilary

Looks like one of those weeks where everything happens at once been there with the plumbing surprises. Glad the old-school plumber showed up just in time. Here’s hoping things settle down soon for you.

That sounds like a truly awful time. I am glad that you are feeling at least a bit easier. Hugs. And hopes for more peace in the weeks to come.

Wow - you crammed a lot of life into this post. Whew! Plumbing issues - ugh. Glad it was solved fairly easily. Health issues - worrisome, but you sound positive about it all. Bomb Squad?!! holy cow. Then again, sadly, nothing is surprising in this day and age. I'm going to take a dip into my pool - this will cool us off. You feel it? Sending chill thoughts your way. Take care.

I'd missed the news about Eastbourne until I switched on hoping to find Cam Norrie playing and it was still wee Emma, everything running behind because of weather and evacuations! Honestly, from the micro to the macro, things have gone haywire! Sorry you've still had to struggle with the health... stay strong! YAM xx

I am quite distressed to know of these ongoing health issues, Hilary. I was hoping that you would be on the upswing by now. These are the times when the barrier imposed by distance is most annoying. It’s hard to offer tangible help from the other side of the Atlantic. Plumbing problems and bomb squads don’t help either! I do hope the tennis and the cricket offer some diversion. Stay as strong as you possibly can. Many hugs - David

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

@ Melody - yes and even more today ... still one day at a time ... thank goodness for that plumber - you're so right ...

@ EC - it's been a bit much - but I'm being patient, as best I can. I sure hope for more peace in the weeks ahead ...

@ Joanne - life is fun isn't it!! The leak was fixed - the mess and repercussions not so much yet ... I do cope - thankfully. I know - the bomb disposal unit carried out a controlled explosion apparently - so unsure if it was anything. You are so lucky having the pool ... and if I could I would join you!! Thanks for the offer ...

@ Yam - Cam went out early ... my South African friend had her son at the same time as Cam when he was born ... so they know his parents very well - and see them when they're over from NZ - as now. Poor wee Emma was knocked out today ... I don't think Cam is playing doubles down in E/b. Let's put it this way: life is interesting at times ... but at least there's tennis and cricket ...

@ David - I'm afraid the health issues will be here for a while yet - and not quite sure where things are going ... but I'll find out in due course. I'm in the system, well and truly in it, which is the main thing, for now. Oh I had a fun conversation with a couple of guys today ... all of us comparing our challenges! We left happily laughing. The bomb disposal happening too was a bit much ... tomorrow men start coming round again - the gas man, and the maintenance man - I'm being kept on my brain toes if nothing else!! I'm strong ... just not that comfortable ... but ok otherwise ...

Thanks everyone: who knows where we're going ... I'm probably better off than many ... as the District Nurse said today - I can see you've got common sense and realise what's going on. Thankfully she turned up - as the phone network had gone down. Life!

Cheers Hilary

That is both frustrating and wrong that neither the agent or emergency plumber didn't respond.

Hilary! I found you again! Sure is a lot going on over there. Stay cool!!

Sounds like quite a week. Glad the leak was able to be fixed- but the whole process sounds like it came with some hassles. Hopefully all the equipment is all working properly and you can focus on other things. :) ~Jess

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

@ Sandra - well there's nothing I could do, except wait ... also it was a pin hole leak ... not a major break - now that would have been fun!! Life's like that at the moment ...

@ Pam - gosh I've been trying to comment ... but your postings seem to be against anyone getting in ... I've now found your email and emailed you ... as you can see - I'm in the throes of 'dealing with things' ...

@ Jess - yes, you could say that, and it continues ... still it makes life interesting! Leak fixed ... but the ongoing challenges and the remnants of the leak remain. I suspect I'll be able to focus on other things in a few weeks, but will have intervals as time passes ...

Cheers everyone - I'm just hoping for a slightly quieter weekend and next week - I hope! Take care - and thanks for your visits - Hilary

What an eventful week! Luckily you have the tennis to watch - is it only me who finds the thwack-thwack mildly soporific? I wish you a much less eventful week ahead.

Diane said...

Sorry about the health issues and sorry I have not been visiting but just so busy. It sounds like a terrible week in all, I hope that everything is now under control. Take care, Diane

This week everything happened!!
Be patient and your days will become calmer,
maybe even a little cooler!!
Life is complicated!!

retirementreflections said...

Hilary - Your posts are never, ever boring - quite the opposite! That was a very full on week (or part week) that you had. Wishing you smooth weeks ahead!

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

@ Annalisa - yes it has been eventful to put it mildly ... the tennis and cricket provide relaxing interludes. No, I too can easily fall asleep watching the tennis - but I just enjoy the peaceful (well vaguely - they hit the ball so v hard) thwack-thwack of that ball going backwards and forwards ... I too hope I have a less stressful week ...

@ Diane - just life isn't it ... thankfully it's not serious, serious. Terrible is a good word - thank you. I can imagine you've been busy with the house and garden, let alone other aspects ...

@ Katerina - one thing I am good at is not getting flustered or flurried - which is a good thing - many would be over worrying - luckily I let it ride for the moment.

Re the heat - no ... this week is back to being hotter, again I'm lucky I live on the coast - where we do get sea-breezes ... as you say life is complicated ... still it adds some pizzazz to our present place in life ...

@ Donna - it's been a full on week or two, and still going on - but at least it's not ahead I guess!

Thanks everyone - I hope things settle down during July and life can return to normal by August - cheers to you all - Hilary

Bless you! I do hope that life is treating you better, my dear! Now, you have Wimbledon to look forward to, it's almost here! Did i read that right, that there was a bomb squad on the road leading to Town Hall? I know right where that is, as you know. I must read more of the news in Eastborne! Take care and keep up with being positive, no matter what. xx

Whew! I thought I would have “condoled” long ago in view of these bundled misfortunes. Herewith made up for.
May July bring you ample compensation, Hilary.

Yikes! I'm glad the whistling wasn't something more nefarious. And that it got resolved. It's a crazy world we live in, eh? Half the stuff that goes on, I just shake my head. Here's sending positive vibes and sunshine your way!

I love your mentally curiousness! I have it too, it feels like there's always something new to learn or explore, we just need oodles of time! Glad there was an old school tradie to help you fix things! And really hope the health issues resolve soon <3

Far too much business for one week. I also had a Week from H*** but different events. If I were still working, I'd never get everything done.

Hope this week is a calm one, Hils.

@ Kay – thanks so much, things are ticking along without much change. Yes I'm enjoying the bits of Wimbledon I'm seeing. Yes – there was a controlled explosion … house clearance contractors found the unidentified liquid – which needed to be disposed of – all clear and all well I'm pleased to say.

@ Sean – well that's life isn't it … not much has changed since then – in fact probably reverted, but I'm patient and all will sort itself out – thanks for your thoughts …

@ Rosey – yes I am having a season of 'stress' or frustrating things happening – luckily in the summer time …

@ Sandra – thanks for all your thoughts … I love the Whistling Duck painting … and the fact that a duck can whistle – like my pin-hole leak …

@ Sherry – yes … but unfortunately more problems have arisen! Such is life …

@ Dora – I'm glad you enjoyed the chatty post …

@ Tara – yes – sadly that insaneness is going on – not a happy ending yet … it will come. July needs to improve too!!

@ Crystal – well it's turned out to be quite serious – but thankfully not my fault, only left with a mess to deal with … and as you say a right old world we live in …

@ Deniz – thank you – curiosity still wins out as far as I'm concerned. I'm glad things are sorting themselves out rather more slowly than I'd like … and as far as reading and garnering more information is concerned – more time is definitely needed. I too hope the health improves – I suspect a while away yet ... but I'm up and about …

@ Jacqui – oh I'm sorry you too have been having weeks from hell … I definitely don't get everything done … I admire your tenacity ..

Cheers everyone – thanks so much for being so supportive – wishing you all well - Hilary
