Ma'at is the goddess, who personified the ancient Egyptian concepts of:
truth, balance,
order, harmony,
law, morality,
and justice …
as well as bringing order to the world from chaos …
Goddess Ma'at |
Her roles in reminding us of the necessities of being decent, helping and co-operating with others in 2023 …
... seem to me to be well worth remembering … if only we could pass these ideals across to the many despicable rulers, who seem to want to cause harm to other human beings …
I know we all do what we can to help others … and wish you all a very Happy New Year as 2022 turns into 2023 …

Seconded!!! All the very best, Hilary. YAM xx
Well said. Happy New Year!
I hereby nominate you, Hilary, for a new position to be created at the United Nations, "Special Ambassador for Human Decency and Respect for All." It is sadly overdue. In the meantime - all the very best for 2023. I hope it will be a fabulous year for you. Hugs - David
I think Ma'at has too many reponsibilities. Just looking after truth and justice across the world would be exhausting enough for one goddess.
It is 2023 here already :)
That's a lot of responsibility and multi-tasking - even for a female deity!
All the best for the coming year.
What an essential (and sadly overworked) diety. Thank you - and Happy New Year.
That's a lot of responsibility. Happy New Year!
Love,
Janie
Happy new year, Hilary!
Happy New Year.
@ Yam - many thanks ...
@ Alex - great ... you've endorsed Ma'at's concepts ...
@ David - that's high praise ... very much appreciated ... oh how I wish it'd come true.
@ Hels - we just need to be positive for ourselves and others ... some people are able to achieve so much ...
@ John - yes it is isn't it ... but I'm sure she'd be able to delegate and oversee life's improvements ...
@ EC - yes poor woman would need to be ultra with it - butI'm sure she'd cope ... and as you say she's essential ...
@ Janie - many thanks ... given a chance she'd cope ...
@ Anabel - same to you ...
@ Liz - many thanks ...
Thanks everyone - let's all hope this year will be easier for the world's population - with thoughts as 2023 gets going ... cheers Hilary
Perhaps the best we can do is to live a good life and hope we lead by example.
Happy New Year, Hilary!
Hi Hilary! I am here to wish you a very Happy 2023!!
Happy New Year, Hilary!
Wasn’t Ma’at a goddess of justice? I vaguely recall reading that court cases might have been held in her temple? Or was that just a novel?
Anyway, happy New Year to you!
@ Dan - yes you're right there ... live in the moment as best we can for ourselves, family and others - exactly ... lead by example.
@ Rosey - great to see you ... thanks for popping by - I appreciate it!
@ John - lovely to see you ...
@ Sue - yes, I mentioned Justice in the post ... so you're right. I need to look at Greek deities and their history ... and know I must come back to the posts you wrote - probably nearly 2 years ago. This year is my year of reading ... my intention ...
Thanks so much to you all for your Happy New Year wishes ... I do so hope the same for us all, and many downtrodden peoples - it's been great having you around. Cheers Hilary
I am befuddled how man should rule our communities. Nothing seems to work well!
Happy New Year, dear efriend.
Wonderful wishes for 2023. I think we can all do with more kindness and it starts with us. Hoping people will treat each other with more gentleness and kindness in this new year. :)

So well said.
A very Happy New Year to you. May it be a healthy, peaceful and happy year. Cheers Diane
Yep. I agree. We'll see how it goes in 2023. Keep the light shining in your posts. Thank you.
@ Jacqui - I know ... befuddled is a good word - we need freedom of speech, kindness to others ... but I'll get very muddled - if I go on! Another aspect for you to build in to your clan's storyline ...
@ Jess - thanks ... New Year messages now-a-days seem challenging to be appropriate ... but you've endorsed my thoughts ... while your story telling is always a delight.
@ Diane - thank you ... you too have a healthy year over 'La Manche', while I look forward to your French and SA posts ...
@ Joanne - thanks ... I can't not be of a positive ilk - it's the only way ...
Thanks so much for your thoughtful comments - here's to a happier world ... cheers for now! Hilary
She sounds like the perfect goddess for us to learn from. Happy New Year to you.
Happy New Year! Those are all good qualities to strive for!
@ Annalisa - yes she does doesn't she ... and her ideas and persona has lasted over 4,000 years - she'll be around for a while ... I hope today's leaders and thinkers will take her concepts on board ...
@ Sherry - thanks ... great to see you ... and yes they are good qualities to strive for ...
Happy New Year to you both ... cheers Hilary
Beautifully put, Hilary. Best wishes to you and yours in 2023. I'm trying to remember how long it's been since I first read your post. I think it was the early millennium, at least. Happy 4th New Day!
Happy Happy NEW YEAR!
Thank you for telling us about Ma'at. I love learning about Egyptian goddesses. We surely do need to remember the concepts she embodied.
We need to pay some attention to Ma'at, and maybe she'll help us out this year. Great post, Hilary.
How lovely to invoke Ma'at and invite those energies into 2023! May we all do our part to make our world a kinder, gentler, more just, more evenly-resourced, and nurturing place for all.
Happy New Year, Hilary! Let's pray 2023 will be the best, yet!
@ Joylene - thanks ... we've been around together a looooonnnng time ... when you visited the UK - when was that?! Next week I go into my 16th year on the blog: amazing!
@ Holly - thanks ... great to see you ...
@ Chrys - so pleased you enjoyed this post on Ma'at ... I want to learn more about the Greeks this year ... it's on my list of 'to dos' ...
@ Lee - I hope Ma'at will lead some guidance to those in power ... and for us all to remember. I too hope she'll help us out this year - we certainly need it ...
@ Deborah - thank you ... I hope she complies for the world - while in the meantime as you mention we must do what we can to help our world be kinder, gentler and more just, more evenly-resourced, and nurturing for the world as a whole.
@ Teresa - good to see you ... I do hope life eases up for us all, and particularly in those parts of the world - where life is hard ...
Thanks so much - Happy New Year to you all - cheers Hilary
Here's to you, Hillary. I so agree with every single word. Ma'at should be our guide as we go into 2023 and continue into this century.
Happy New Year!
All the best for 2023, Hilary!
Firstly, let me apologise for not visiting your blog recently. I always got an email each time you posted, but they stopped arriving and I, therefore, assumed you were taking a break! Wrong!
If only we'd all listen to Ma'at, perhaps she should tap her stick on the ground a little harder!
Have a wonderful 2023 Hilary.
Hope you have a very happy 2023!
@ Bish - lovely to see you ... thanks - I thought Ma'at was a good find, albeit she's been there for over 4,000 years, for 2023 and on ...
@ Michelle - thanks so much ... I'll be over soon ...
@ Keith - yes I know - a number of blogs I follow have fallen off the radar - and I must do something about it ... a couple of bloggers are looking at how they handle their followers - I'll be looking at my own system in about 2 weeks ... i.e. mid January ... and catch people whose blogs I've been missing off my list.
I suspect I'd rather not have the earth moved here - we've enough going on, yet we could do with some of her fairy dust ...
@ Elizabeth - so good to see you - thank you ...
Great to see you all and I do so wish the world will have an easier life ahead - humans can live together: peacefully and happily ... that I wish for. Cheers and Happy New Year - Hilary
We could certainly use Ma'at to make an appearance today, couldn't we, Hils?
Hope your holidays were happy.
@ Thanks Sandra ... we most certainly could use Ma'at making an appearance and sticking around for a while; I had a lovely time over the seasonal festivities ... and I hope yours was too - cheers Hilary
Wishing you all the very best for 2023, may it be a healthy year full of fun.
Take care Diane
Thanks Diane - you enjoy yourself down south ... sunny Southern Africa - the best! Happy times to us all and a healthy year full of fun - as you rightly recommend - cheers Hilary
