Back to the coal face this past week … which has been somewhat torrid, but all is being sorted out with the NHS … life goes on – and it looks like at some stage an op … but for now back to some form of normal …
The Universe in Verse -
15 portals to wonder through
science and poetry
It was like Piccadilly Circus … people appeared, disappeared, reappeared, sat around, got called up, into one room and out again … then I got a hug from the nurse practitioner and sent on my way.
I took this little book with me for my appointment at the hospital 'The Universe in Verse' by Maria Popova, with illustrations by Ofra Amit … as you'll see from the descriptions I've attached ... pertinent to today for us to consider ...
In here you'll find an article The Octopus and the Unknown, followed by a poem written by the author, 'Impossible Blues' …
Wislawa Szymborska
(1923 - 2012)
An appropriate series of illustrated essays through the lenses of science and poetry. A celebration of beauty as we search (wherever we are in life) for the positive and reality.
Symmetry, and the Hidden
Order of Things
So these 15 portals are very appropriate for me at this time … the ups and downs … nothing serious, but something needs to be put into place – which is happening.
Flowers and the
Birth of Ecology
I hope you'll be able to check out this little book – lots of interesting notions and ideas in here … very thought provoking … and I leave you with a couple of notions to contemplate ...
Without flowers, there would be no us.
No poetry.
No Science.
No Music.
I hope to be back to normal with my posting – which I know is 'never normal' – whatever that is … but I'll be around a bit more …
Thanks for being here …

Health matters can be a real drag, eh? Wishing you all the best for whatever comes next and thanks for the intro to some poetry I had not yet met... YAM xx
I am pleased that things are being sorted out and hope you will soon be feeling much more normal.
Maria Popova is an interesting person, with many strings to her bow.
Keep well, Hilary x
Glad to hear that something is being done for your health problems. The thought of an op is never a pleasant one, but if it fixes you up that’s great.
This post is such a thoughtful blend of personal reflection and wonder. Your strength, curiosity, and grace through uncertainty shine so clearly. Wishing you continued steadiness and moments of beauty along the way. I just shared a new post. I am excited for you to read it. Thank you. Have a lovely week.
I am so pleased that things are being sorted out. Always a relief - even if an op is in your future. Keep us posted please.
And thank you for the heads up on a book that I can see I am going to HAVe to track down.
Looks like an interesting book.
Hopefully they do sort it all out for you!
Oh flowers flowers flowers, so appreciated as they feed my soul. I feel the same way about poetry. I hope your health issue is sorted out.
@ Yam - yes ... it is being a bit of 'nuisance', but things will come around. You'll enjoy the book with its poems, essays and thoughts to consider ...
@ Janice - the wheels are turning ... but it's a way ahead for now. As you say Maria Popova has created a wonderful world for us.
@ Anabel - slowly but surely the NHS will come to the fore for me ... and exactly if things can be put back into place it'll make a huge difference.
@ Melody - good to see you and thanks for your comment.
@ EC - life ticks along ... at least I'm in the system now, rather than wishing 'we' could get me sorted out. The Universe in Verse is a fabulous little book ... so much thought in there for us to consider.
@ Liz - it is fascinating ...
@ Alex - yes, me too ... it's on its journey!
@ Terra - great to see you ... yes blooming flowers ... blooming health too soon. I need to read more poetry ... but this book and the three Mark Crick ones help along the way.
Cheers to you all - have great weeks - and thanks for being here ... Hilary
Good morning, Hilary: Your post is a delight, as always, and I am glad to know that there is at least some temporary relief at the moment. If an operation lurks in the future, one might assume that it will be to “fix the problem” and get you up to full speed again. I expect that libraries the world over will now be besieged with requests for this little book. Stay well and stay in touch. David
Glad that you seem to be in good hands with the health issue! Be sure to take lots of time for yourself.
Wishing you strength while things get sorted out with your health. Contemplating your notations. "Without Flowers" beautiful
I'm glad you have a handle on your health issues, Hilary, and hope all will be well soon! Thanks for the book info. It sounds interesting. Have a pleasant week! 🌹
@ David - life ticks along ... and yes once the journey starts along the operation line ... life will be easier. Nothing major - I don't think! I hope many people will get to read this little book ... it's inspirational.
@ Elizabeth - yes I'm happy with the support I've had from the NHS. I do take quite a lot of time for myself ... but obviously once I have the op - I'll take time to adjust: good advice, thank you.
@ Truedessa - I'm sure I'm on the right path to improved life. I thought this little book is such a joy - I needed to let other know about it.
To add to your thought re "Without Flowers" ... Darwin apparently could not comprehend how flowers could emerge so suddenly and take over so completely. He called it an 'abominable mystery'. But out of that mystery a new world was born ...
@ Debbie - yes - I'm glad things are being sorted out health-wise. The book is a delight ...
Cheers to you all - I'm so glad the book sounds enticing to one and all - Hilary
Take good care of yourself, Hilary.
Myself, I do take comfort in that with me six feet under there will still be
• Poetry
• Science
• Music
+ this and that ...
The peace of the night.
Science and poetry seem an unusual mix these days, but when you look back at the scholars of the past, it encompasses the questions and musings we need to solve the puzzles. (That's not quite how I wanted to say it, so I hope you understand!)
Take care of yourself x
@ Sean - I'm doing what I can ...thankfully it's not that serious and things will get put right. Yes - melancholically we're all in our own time frame going in that direction ... but as you say I'm sure'll be plenty of the good things in our time ahead. Peace - at all times to you ...
@ Annalisa - yes they do seem strange bedfellows but as you mention the scholars of the past were all totally entwined in these philosophical sciences and musings ... and I do totally understand your comment ... I wish I understood more - but we live and learn ...
Cheers to you both - so much to consider in life ... take care and happy weekend - Hilary
Good to know things are on the up. I sense you are quite a positive person so things are bound to get better! An interesting little book.
Science and poetry can be an interesting combination. Hope your health is on the mend. Get well soon!
Thinking of you, Hilary. I hope you are truly on the mend now. I loved the symmetry picture in your post and the flowers. Beautiful. As Pradeep says, poetry and science would make a good combination. Get well very soon! Xx
Glad things are getting sorted out, Hils. Sending all good wishes for your health, well-being, and happiness. Cheers,
Know I am rooting for you. And, yes, please get back to "normal" health-wise, but keep that extra edge for your posts (grin!).
I've read some Maria Popova before - her stuff can be quite immersive, but pulls it all together - nature, arts, and science. Take care!
Sorry to hear you are having health issues. I've got one of my own, a broken ankle and I thought that miraculously I could wear a walking boot and it would heal (a cast would mess up my abilities at work, and oh my, we can't have that, can we?). Turns out, I should have just gotten the cast because I'm on week 13 and instead of healing, I've hurt it further. I'd like to give myself a swift kick in the bum, but I wouldn't want to hurt the other ankle. :). Making an appointment to get a cast the first day of summer vacation, and instead of teaching summer school this year, I'll just be sitting and healing (I hope!). Here's to both of us being fully recovered, sooner rather than later!
Flowers do inspire a lot of artwork! Hope your health issues get cleared up.
The Universe in Verse looks interesting. I like the idea of combining poetry and science. Cheers,
Take special care, Hils and have a healthy, happy weekend. Cheers,
I'm allergic to flowers. LOL! I appreciate them from a distance and definitely in print, not so much in person.
Wishing you success getting back on a schedule, and don't beat yourself up in the meantime, eh?
@ Keith – finally things might be on the up … as you note I am a positive person – so that makes life easier, thankfully … the book opens doors …
@ Pradeep – I know science and poetry can most definitely go together – thanks re the thought on my health …
@ Val – thank you – I think I might be coming out of it now … GP will be needed, but at least I'll have a clear head! Maria Popova has some amazing thought processes – so good to read …
@ Joanne – thanks for rooting for me … I am progressing back to normality (new normality perhaps!) but feeling easier. I'm glad you've come across Maria Popova … she is amazing …
@ Rosey – thanks for your thoughts – good to see you here … your health problems decide distinctly challenging – I do hope the healing is really happening now …
@ Sherry – flowers can be wonderful to see – can't they … and thanks re health aspects …
@ Sandra – thanks so much for all your comments – always appreciated …
Cheers to one and all – my latest posts give a bit more of an update … Hilary
Thanks Crystal - sorry to hear you're allergic to flowers ... allergies are so frustrating - I'm fortunate in that regard ... I won't/don't beat myself up luckily ... cheers Hilary
