Just over three weeks' ago I had to call our NHS 111 helpline … and got taken into A & E … I wasn't seriously ill – no broken bones, the old insides of the engine weren't playing happily …
Zebra in the Kruger Park, north of Durban
I was lucky … the paramedics were youngsters … one of whom had just been to Durban for their honeymoon, along with six friends … oh yes with the husband! … he's a paramedic too, but not on the same shift … so we had a natter about the country and safaris on the way over to our local hospital – she was happy …
I was admitted straight away, it was 8.00 am or so, and after some trial runs I was eventually dealt with, and then after lunch sent home – at least not admitted into a ward … which at one stage was on the cards.Nature Reserve in distance from
Rye town
I've been in limbo – I'm seeing the GP this week .. and so will know more. Life ticks along … it's just the wheels need to turn … and I'll find out what's been bugging me since Covid …Discovery Centre in Nature Reserve
Some friends and I went over to Rye – to the nature reserve there – I took it slowly, but they've got a brilliant new Discovery Centre … which has been built on stilts … to take into account the fluctuating tides …Discovery Centre near end of build -
showing stilts
... the Reserve floods twice a day … while the history of the area is fascinating ...I'll come back to give you a better update on this area of shingle coastline – rare plants, booming Bitterns, tiny microcosms of life at the edge … needing the salt-water and spray.Shingle Beach at Tide Mills, Newhaven
I've got a few things I want to post about … but it's A – Z month and that's pretty time-consuming … either for contributors and/or for commenters … so I'll go quiet and come alive after Easter …Bittern in full flight
Thank goodness the weather's warming up – but we have a cold east wind, that being by the coast is pretty chilly … our newsagent said to me yesterday – that it was freezing this morning … I agreed!
All is well – in fact I'm feeling better … just need to get the 'old bod sorted out' … I'm fairly certain there's nothing serious ... just needed the 'shake- out' (so to speak) ...

All health is serious at this end of life, Hilary... continue taking it easy then as prescribed! I did notice an absence but admit I thought it might be a holiday. Sorry to hear it was otherwise. Sending healing vibes... YAM xx
So sorry to hear you have been ill. Hope whatever it is gets diagnosed and sorted out soon. Take care!
I hope the innards are swiftly sorted into good working order again. Take it easy, rest and recover.
I am so sorry to read this and hope the issues can be quickly and comprehensively sorted out. Rest and recover. We will happily keep the lights on for you.
@ Yam - no holiday ... but is probably what need - but I'll take being back home and awaiting the next step ... all well thankfully ...
@ Anabel - these things happen - thankfully it might have spurred some action ... but all ok for now ...
@ Janice - nothing like you and Barry have been through ... and I'm just thankful for things as they are ...
@ EC - it's just a nuisance (at least I'm fairly certain) ... so we'll see what happens in the coming week ... great to know you'll keep the lights on - thanks!
Cheers and thanks to you all for your thoughts - I'll be fine, I'm sure - Hilary
Oh my! Glad you got some care at the critical time, and are now in the medical wheelhouse of blood giving (no doubt) and monitoring everything. I wish you well and all the best. We need you as perky as spring flowers. Take care and know I'm sending good thoughts and energy from across the pond. Cheers, my friend.
I'm so sorry. That sucks. I'm glad to hear it wasn't serious enough that you had to be admitted, but still, that's pretty serious. I hope you get it all worked out in good order.
Sorry you got rushed to the hospital. At least you didn't have to stay. Hope your doctor can pinpoint the issue and get you the right help.
If you are feeling dismal, just look at the bittern. Standing he looks majestic and soaring above he looks magical.
I am certain the Drs are on top of everything. It probably is something you need to get straightened out like your thyroid, vitamin deficiency etc… I’ll cross my fingers for you when you see your dr. I’ve had some issues and my body needed a charge up, sorta speak.
@ Joanne - something just happened that needed A&E attention - thank goodness for our NHS ... oddly I'm feeling perkier - just need to know what happened ... Wednesday is nearly here ...
@ Liz - I'm so glad I wasn't admitted - that would have thrown me! Me too ... I'm sure it'll be 'sorted out' soon enough ...
@ Alex - thanks ... and yes I hope the docs can work out what happened ... and get me back 'to normal' ...
@ Hels - I know critters certainly stand tall - I loved knowing about the Bittern and hearing it ...
@ Birgit - I'm not sure about the docs being on top of everything ... but I'll find out more on Wednesday ... I suspect it's more likely to be a birth defect of some description ... rather than deficiencies ... I've always looked after myself. I shall see!!
Thanks so much everyone - I'll keep you up-to-date when I've found out more ... but after Easter ... we are having lovely sunny weather ... no doubt it'll portend a wet summer?! Cheery am I not!! Take care and I'll be around - Hilary
It sounds like you’ve been through a bit of a health scare, but it’s great to hear that you're feeling a bit better and being taken care of. The nature reserve trip must have been a nice escape, and I love the imagery you’ve shared — the Discovery Centre on stilts is such a clever design, considering the tides. The wildlife and unique ecosystem at the shingle coastline sound fascinating, especially with the bitterns making an appearance. Wishing you a smooth recovery and looking forward to your posts after Easter!
I shared a new post; you are invited to read: https://www.melodyjacob.com/2025/04/amazing-guidingcross-hoodie-testimony-faith-hope.html Thank you.
I am quite distressed, Hilary, to hear that you have not been up to par, and I hope that the doctors will get busy without delay to find out exactly what is wrong and elevate you back to full form. We need our Hilary! That building on stilts is probably the forerunner of many such structures as rising tides are going to be an issue all over the world. Now get well! That is a direct order from Dr. David in Ontario!
@ Melody - thank you for your thoughts ...
@ David - I'm fine thankfully - but obviously need to find out what's going on ... I'm not going anywhere as far as I know ... I'll be around Dr David!!
Cheers and thanks so much the two of you - Hilary
Glad you're going to get answers soon, and hopefully a great treatment plan!
Stilts are really the smartest way to go for buildings near water these days.
Well, shoot. I hope everything works out, Hilary. Sounds good so far.
Health challenges are the worst! We're dealing with our daughter who is hypoglycemic and sensitive to about 250 things that commonly appear in food, so it's been a rough go -- figuring out what she should and shouldn't consume. It's amazing seeing how differently she functions when things are under control. Here's wishing you solid heath!
Goodness, I'm sure you didn't need that scare. Hope your doctor sorts out the issue.
@ Elizabeth - I hope something will at least be discussed tomorrow ... I feel ok (thankfully) - just like it all clarified the challenges I'd been living with. Interesting times!
It's fun to see buildings on stilts - especially in that setting ... shingle-land out to the Channel ... very low lying ...
@ Jacqui - thankfully ... it's all fine, at least I think it is, I'm not in any great distress ... just be glad to be back to normal - as near as can be ...
@ Crystal - hey great to see you! I read about your daughter and the trials she's having as she grows up ... especially those nutritional ones. Good luck to her and to you - it's good you've found how she can function happily ... with thoughts - I'm considerably luckier than that ... but I do think about her and the family ...
@ Diane - in some ways I'm glad it's happened and I knew it could be dealt with (well I assumed that - I'm positive in outlook) ... tomorrow will let me have some answers and set me off along the route to normality ...
Thanks so much for your thoughts and cheery wishes ... more sun here, cold wind - but no rain ... which is not so good ... take care one and all - cheers Hilary
Oh gosh, Hilary. I'm so sorry you went through that, and glad you're feeling a little better now. Paramedics are such wonderful people and it always amazes me how calm they can be under such trying circumstances. Hope you get to the bottom of your ailments x
"Fly", Hilary, "fly"! My good thoughts are with you. ;-)
So glad to hear you're feeling better! <3 Hoping they can get you some answers soon <3 <3 <3
@ Annalisa - yes it was a little excruciating ... but the wheels of NHS are in the process ... I just wait. Yes, the paramedics and all staff were really caring - I was lucky ... I too hope it's resolved.
@ Sean - thank you ... it'll all come right ... I'm just glad we're in touch again and that your blog is back up and running ...
@ Deniz - well thankfully I hope things are improving ... I'm waiting on the medics ... and yes some answers would be good - but I'm up and about ...
Cheers to the three of you - and thanks for your thoughts - Hilary
Hils, Sending all kinds of positive energy and wishes for good health your way. YOU take care of yourself, please. Cheers,
Oh Hilary, I'm glad you're feeling better now, but that must have been a worry. How lovely you could talk to paramedics who'd been to 'the old country'. I do hope you'll take it very easy for a bit. Lovely photos from Rye, by the way.
I hope you are feeling much better and have gotten things sorted out a bit more. Glad you went and got checked out when things felt very off. That's important! :)
Sounds like the bod needed a reboot! Pleased to hear you weren't kept waiting for hours at the hostpital like so many have to these days. Rye nature recerve, a regular haunt mine! I love sitting in the hides with my binoculars watching the birds!
Sending good wishes, Hilary, and looking forward to your return.
Glad you got to go to the reserve, Hils. Sending healthy wishes your way. Cheers,
Six friends on the honeymoon. Well that sounds exciting. Hope you are having a healthy day, Hils.
@ Sandra x 3! - thanks for your support ... the kids these days seem to be very pragmatic about life ... so enjoying your honeymoon with friends obviously made sense ...her husband is also a paramedic ... and yes the Reserve visit was really interesting ...
@ Val - yes ... luckily nothing 'that serious' - just something definitely needed resolving 'immediately' ... and yes they were pleased I could happily chat with them about their recent visit to Durban - 'our old country' ...
@ Lizzy - next week is the next step - so I await that day with hope! There was something definitely wrong that needed to be addressed ... so with our NHS I was lucky ...
@ Keith - yes the body definitely needed a reboot .. still ongoing. Calling NHS 111 - they realised my situation couldn't wait ... and I went straight into 'a ward' for treatment ... which took many hours - but at least I was under a necessary medical eye ...
@ Deborah - thanks ... I'm around - just waiting to be fixed, and back to normal - next week I hope.
Cheers to you all - have a peaceful Easter weekend ... our very cold wind has dissipated somewhat ... so Spring is here - blissful - take care everyone - Hilary
Happy Easter, Hils. Wishing you a healthy, happy day.
